2022-2023 Cooking Project Year
Leader: Shawn Eggers
Welcome to the Badger Creek 4H Cooking Project Page! This project is open to all ages 9 and older. This year we will touch base on a variety of cake and cookie decorating topics. Through this project we will work on building our skills, knowledge and competency in food preparation, food safety, food selection, and food science as it applies to everyday life. We will generally meet on Sundays four times a year. Meetings are typically two to three hours in length. Below are the tentative dates for the 2022/2023 project year. Please check back regularly/occasionally, as I will do my best to keep this page updated. 2022-2023 Meeting dates and times: Meeting #1 - Sunday, November 13th, 2022 [2:00-5:00 PM] - Brush Embroidery & Painting Meeting #2 - Sunday, January 29th, 2023 [2:00-5:00 PM] - Embellishments Meeting #3 - Sunday, March 26th, 2023 [2:00-5:00 PM] - Spatula & Basket weave Meeting #4 - Sunday, April 30th, 2023 [2:00-5:00 PM] - Salsa Supplies and costs: We will be meeting in-person this year and while the cost of projects can fluctuate, we are asking for a $50 project fee to help cover the costs. Wearing an apron at meetings is recommended as we can sometimes get a bit messy. If food allergies are a concern then please let the project leader know as soon as possible so that the necessary precautions or substitutions can be taken. If you're interested in joining this project and you have not already signed up for it, then please email us to see if there is availability, badgercreek4h@gmail.com. We are looking forward to a fun and exciting year. FORMS2020/21 Youth Treatment Authorization Form

May 23rd, 2021 - Lemon Bars
When you think of Summer what's one flavor that comes to mind? Many people think of the smells and tastes of BBQ, coconuts, sunscreen, chlorine in the pool or a salted seaside and fresh mountain air along with watermelon and fresh cucumber salad. But of all the smells and tastes of summer, perhaps Lemon tops the list with its fresh scent and tangy taste that pairs well in iced tea, marinades, lemonade, salad dressing and much more. Not to mention it's bright happy summer color that can't help but make you feel like it's an earmark of the warm summer heat year round. |

Meeting 1 - Apple Pie These apple pies were so much fun to make! The prep work was daunting, but overall the pies turned out GREAT! We did have one mishap where we think the nutmeg was mistaken for cinnamon, but lessons were learned and that's all part of the fun. |

Meeting 5 - Salsa and County Fair Presentations Our last meeting of the project year was kicked off with making some fire roasted salsa (AKA Salsa Quemada) which we brought to the May club meeting to share with everyone as an after meeting snack. We received wonderful compliments and our kids were beaming with pride over their hard work. We ended the meeting with a little 'show and tell' of everyone's County Fair food entries. I have to say, I think the kiddos did an excellent job this year! Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! |

October 4, 2015 - Pumpkin Muffins
October's meeting went off with a bang ... not literally of course! We made pumpkin muffins with raisins. It was a learning experience, as one team left out the baking powder. We got to learn what happens when we omit an important ingredient. It was a fantastic first meeting! |

Our November field trip to Apple Hill didn't work out this year due to weather. Hopefully we will be able to visit Apple Hill earlier in the season next fall. HOWEVER ... We made some really awesome caramel apples! We put against each other two different recipes and the kids got to pick which one they wanted to do. We discussed the pros and cons of the different recipes and came up with an ultimate winner - Caramel Apples by Kittencal (recipe above). This recipe was by far the easiest and tastiest of the bunch. The kids had a blast decorating their caramel apples. I am happy to report that it was such a big hit with the kids that they want to do it AGAIN!
December 6, 2015 - Gingerbread Boys and Girls
For our December meeting we made Gingerbread boys and girls which we shared with the club at our club Christmas party at Kings Skate. I think they were a big hit! |

January 3, 2016 - Creamy Chicken & Pasta
Our January's meeting was AWESOME! The kids made some wonderful pasta dishes with a base recipe of a few simple ingredients. From that they were able to customize it to their liking. It was so much fun to taste everyone's final product. One team had a whole wheat penne pasta with hints of garlic. Another team had bow tie pasta with flavors of rosemary and spinach. And the third team had a tri-colored rotini with flavorful mushrooms and onion. Lots of imagination was used to create something fun, healthy and delicious. I know the kids will want to make this again at home! |

March 13, 2016 - German Soft Pretzel Sticks
March's meeting was interesting as we got to learn some basics to bread making. Unfortunately, it had been raining earlier that morning and the kids got to experience the difficulties involved in determining the amount of flour to add when the dew point is high. Under most circumstances we would expect a recipe to be easy to replicate if we recreate each step identically each time. The process of learning today taught us that weather CAN affect our outcomes therefore learning to determine when to modify or compensate a recipe for cooking conditions was key. Despite each group's recipe turning out slightly different, each product was tasty and good in its own right. The kids did get slightly frustrated, but quickly learned that this is all part of the learning experience, things don't always turn out right the first time. |

April 3, 2016 - Cucumber Feta Rolls, Hummus, and Greek Chicken Salad
We had a very successful meeting where we made some wonderful Greek food. I think the kids really enjoyed garnishing their dishes. Each group made a different item for us to all share. Each recipe turned out fantastic! Great job everyone. |
