2022-2023 Project Year_
Leaders: Shawn Eggers and Carol Smith Welcome to the Badger Creek 4H Rabbit Project. This project is open to all ages. The primary purpose of this project is to provide an opportunity for growth and development of youth who “learn by doing”. A secondary purpose is to teach young people good production practices and how to apply them to the selection, feeding and showing of their animals. In the process of feeding and caring for an animal, young people have the opportunity to develop many positive character traits including everyday life skills. Showmanship is especially important in encouraging participation, enhancing leadership skills, boosting self confidence, strengthening and determining overall knowledge. Older or experienced members will be encouraged to help facilitate primary and novice members with the learning objectives. Members will be responsible for acquiring and maintaining their own rabbit if they want one. Owning a rabbit is not required for participation at meetings. Every year we try to cover a variety of things including: rabbit basics such as housing, cleaning, and caring for your rabbit; learn how to identify rabbit breeds, recognize a healthy rabbit, identify diseases, recognize body types, read a pedigree, handle rabbits, judge and show rabbits, identify rabbit parts, determining sex, properly use and maintain equipment and records along with other management practices such as trimming nails and administering medications. Additional aspects will include rabbitry practices such as breeding, culling and disease prevention. We will typically meet the Second Monday of every month at 6:30 pm*. Below are the tentative dates for the project year. Please mark your calendars, as we do try to send out email reminders, however, we do sometimes get busy and forget. |

Bring your rabbit if you have one. We will be playing a game and working on rabbit showmanship for the county fair. Helpful study sets can be found at Quizlet.com. Just type in "Rabbit Showmanship", Rabbit Breeds" or "Rabbit Diseases". The Quizlet app can be downloaded on any smartphone or tablet as well as accessing it via the world wide web. There are tons of study sets to help test your knowledge. Practice these, because some of these questions might show up on the Rabbit Knowledge Quiz Bowl that we will be having at the next meeting.
