The Dog Project will meet In-Person this year. We will be doing obedience work with dogs (no classroom stuff this year).
Meeting Dates: Typically meets the 2nd or 3rd Thursday of each month starting in October (10/6)
Meeting Time: 6:00 PM
Location: Private residence
Requirements: Kids will need a dog they are capable of controlling on their own. Well fitted chain collar, 6-8 foot nylon or leather leash. Shoes they can run in (no sandals). All classes will be totally outdoors - so heavy inclement weather will cancel. Parents will need to stay with their kids during classes, dogs should be 4m-6y in age. Dogs should be have DHLPP, Rabies and Bordetella vaccines before the beginning of class. Flea prevention and heartworm prevention is recommended.
Requirements/Restrictions: For obedience class: A non-aggressive, fully vaccinated dog over 4 months of age.
Choke chain collar or gentle leader (no prong collars), ~3 foot leash, ~10 foot leash or rope
Showmanship collar for those wanting to show at the Sacramento County Fair
Project Goals and Description: To learn basic dog care, gain knowledge of dog breeds and behavior. Each project meeting will cover a topic relating to basic dog care. Preventative medicine, grooming, breed characteristics, etc.
Dog obedience classes will be for 4-H members to train their own dogs.
To teach your dog basic obedience commands
*Obedience class is open for anyone, will be required for participants who want to compete at the Sacramento County Fair (Memorial Day Weekend)
Supplies & Costs: All dogs must be fully vaccinated prior to attending obedience classes (spaying or neutering of dogs highly recommended.) Any unaltered male dogs will need to be approved for obedience class by the project leader prior to beginning obedience classes.
